Romeo Must Die 6 out of 10 Starring: Jet Li I remember when I saw the preview for this movie… wow, I think I drooled! I was so exited to see it after seeing the trailer just once, but I was disappointed. This is a story of two families, both alike in dignity in, fair America where we lay our scene. They are feuding families (Like Romeo and Juliet), in a competitive world. A pair of star-crossed lovers meets, one from each of the enemy families, (Like Romeo and Juliet) to the vehement disapproval of each’s kin, (Like Romeo and Juliet). Han, the character from the Chinese family happens to be a kung fu expert and incarcerated at the beginning of the movie ( um, I don’t remember the kung fu in Shakespeare). Han returns from his jailbreak in Hong Kong to avenge the death of his brother Po in America. I don’t know why I saw this so many times (6 I think). I really didn’t think that it was too good. The story wasn’t too bad, except in this version of the popular play, Romeo and Juliet never spend the night… or for that matter, kiss, hug, have a conversation, or really like each other. Also, at the beginning, we can see manifestations of the cast from the play. Characters like Mercutio and Tybalt, but after a while, the story gets jumbled around and any similarity is lost. (I’m not positive they intended the story to be a parallel with Shakespeare.) Also, if you do see it, keep it at one time, everyone that I’ve asked agrees that it isn’t too bad the first time, but after that, it gets severely boring! I don’t appreciate the amount of pulleys and computer effects that they used in the fights in this movie… Seriously! Jet is really talented, let him show it off!!! I SUGGEST YOU WATCH FOR: Jet with the firehose… the sounds that they put in (hose against skull) sound really cool. Also, watch for the one maneuver that Jet does earlier in that same scene where he jumps once and kicks a full circle of guys… He hangs in the air for about 5 seconds, and it looks really lame! THE BEST FIGHT: Jet fights with the fire hose in a Wushu rope dart style, pretty cool, but too short to redeem the film. |
