Fist of Legend: 9.2 out of 10 Starring: Jet Li This movie was a remake of the classic Bruce lee movie “The Chinese Connection”, also known as “Fists of Fury”. The plot is about a martial arts student named Chen Zhen that studied in the famous school Jingwu Mun, until he went to Japan to continue his studies. He returns to China when he hears that his master (Master Huo) has been killed in a fight. When Chen hears this, he immediately goes to the Japanese dojo to challenge the master that defeated his. When he effortlessly defeats that master, he sees clearly, as he says, that the Japanese master’s skills were no match for master Huo’s, and there was some other factor. Chen finds that his master had been poisoned and the Japanese master’s victory was illegitimate. With the new tension developed between the Japanese and Chinese schools, Chen’s relationship with a Japanese girl is frowned upon so much that he is forced to leave civilization. Master Huo’s son was left the school, but was not as skilled as Chen and could not earn their respect, building more tension between Chen and Master Huo’s son. There is more to the plot, but I think that the film would be a lot more enjoyable if you see all the story twists for yourself. The fighting in this movie is great. We get to see some of Jet’s real skill and speed. There are quite a few, long, well done fights. I love the buildup to the dojo fight; it builds up a tension (that a good fight should) and makes you feel almost as if you are part of the fight yourself. I SUGGEST YOU WATCH FOR: Jet holding his foot to the Japanese student’s throat (very cool), in the dojo fight, watch for one of the opponents does some kind of flying kick and Jet spin kicks him right in the crotch, sending him flying. Also, there is a short overhead shot in the dojo that shows Jet moving really fast (two sidekicks and a sweep). Look for the broken knee in the beginning fight, and in the fight with Chen against Huo’s son, watch for Jet going western boxing style for a few seconds. THE BEST FIGHT: Chen Zhen unleashes some fuckin' crazy ass in the japanese dojo. He takes on something like 20+ Japanese guys and messes them all up hardcore then fucks up the dojo master which happens to be a total poofter. |
