The Legend of Drunken Master

The legend of Drunken Master (AKA Drunken Master 2): 9.4 out of 10

Starring: Jackie Chan

I paid full price to see this movie in the theater 3 weeks in a row. The first three weeks. It got better every time. In fact I had already seen the subtitled version and owned a copy on video and still couldn’t resist seeing it again and again.

The story is of Wong Fei Hung, and his Drunken style boxing. In the movie, Jackie accidentally switches packages on a train and ends up with the seal of the emperor that the British were trying to steal. In the process, Fei Hung runs into the famed Fu Man Chi who enlists his help to stop the British from robbing Hong Kong of its culture. The whole crime is being committed under the cover of a steel mill that has been taken over by the British. The ending scene, which is about twenty minutes long, is pure adrenaline. Fei Hung goes to defend his friends in the steel mill and stop the thieves. The fight scenes and stunts within are truly immaculate and impressive!

I SUGGEST YOU WATCH FOR: vice crazy legs, eagle holds the wine bottle (try it!), Fei Hung fights with the fan, obscure Chinese humor (Anita Mui). An interesting point about the casting of this film, The actor that plays Jackie’s father is only very few years older than him, and Anita Mui who played his step mother, is much younger!

THE BEST FIGHT: My favorite in the movie is probably the fight against the gangsters somewhere near the middle of the film. He fights five and beats them in a fancy and complicated style. He performs a number of exceptionally difficult stunts and performs some of the most finely choreographed fighting that I’ve seen. He fights while drinking bottle after bottle of liquor, making the choreography all the more complicated!
