City Hunter

City hunter: 3.8 out of 10

Starring: Jackie Chan

This movie was an attempt by Jackie to connect in some way with his fans in Japan. It’s pretty much a hodgepodge of really strange humor and bizarre allusions to things that are quite difficult for a North American audience to understand. The characters are undeveloped throughout, and there is no plot to speak of. The story is (this is my best guess) about a private detective named Ryu, from a (then) anime movie called city hunter, that throughout the film seeks to find food (?) There is also some kind of tacked on plot… I would explain better, but the direction of the film makes it look like an anime and I have no idea what the story was.

I SUGGEST YOU LOOK FOR: Near the end of the film, Jackie does a gymnastic “Iron Cross” between two hanging poles. This is when a person hangs from their arms outstretched to the side in a “T” shape. If you don’t recognize this as difficult, give it a shot! Also, near the beginning when Jackie is being fought be the Women (for whatever reason) he does a handless headspring over a motorcycle. Also, at one point, one of the bad guys closes a door behind him in a crazylegs vertical split.

THE BEST FIGHT: In the theater, when Jackie has to fight the really tall guys and he mimics the movements of Bruce Lee on the screen as he is fighting Kareem Abdul Jabar (Game of Death)
